SCAR Trigger Guide
The FN SCAR is known for its reliability, modularity, and battle-proven design—but the factory trigger isn’t always the platform’s strongest feature. Whether you shoot the SCAR 16S, 17S, 20S, or 15P, upgrading your trigger can dramatically improve feel, control, and performance.
Here’s a breakdown of the best trigger options currently available for the FN SCAR family.
Factory Trigger: Capable, But Basic
FN’s stock SCAR trigger is serviceable and durable, but it’s often criticized for being heavy, gritty, and lacking precision—especially for precision shooters or those transitioning from tuned AR platforms. While it holds up well under hard use, it leaves room for serious improvement.
Geissele Super SCAR Trigger
Best All-Around Upgrade for Any SCAR Model
Designed specifically for the FN SCAR platform, the Geissele Super SCAR trigger offers a two-stage pull with a crisp, clean break and reduced pull weight compared to the factory unit. It works with:
- SCAR 16S
- SCAR 17S
- SCAR 20S
- SCAR 15P
Note: The Super SCAR trigger comes standard on most FN SCAR 20S models, making it one of the few SCAR variants equipped with an upgraded trigger from the factory.
Key Benefits:
- Clean, repeatable break
- Drop-in compatibility
- Proven durability under military conditions
- Ideal for both tactical and precision use
If you’re looking for a dependable, easy-to-install trigger upgrade with a premium feel, the Super SCAR is the gold standard.
AR TRIGGER COMPATIBILITY
Deep Dive: Imperial Arms MTM for FN SCAR
The Imperial Arms MTM (Mil-Spec Trigger Module) is a groundbreaking solution for SCAR owners who want to break free from proprietary trigger limitations. By adapting the SCAR platform to accept standard mil-spec AR triggers, the MTM delivers a new level of customization and control.
Broad Compatibility
The MTM is designed to accept most mil-spec AR-15 triggers, including many binary and forced reset triggers (FRTs). This allows you to tailor the trigger feel, weight, and reset characteristics to your exact preference.
Note: Some fitting with may be required. Drop-In Auto Sears (DIAS) are not compatible with the MTM due to the wide variability in their design and geometry.
Coming Soon: 2- and 3-Position Super Safety Interface
For users seeking enhanced fire control options, Imperial Arms is currently developing a 2- and 3-position Super Safety interface. This will bring added versatility to MTM-equipped SCARs, particularly for those using binary or FRT systems who want a more intuitive and modular selector setup.
️ Installation & Notes
- Replaces the OEM SCAR trigger module entirely
- Accepts standard mil-spec triggers without modification
- Some specialty triggers may require minor fitting depending on tolerances and use case
Why Choose the MTM?
- Unlimited Trigger Customization: Choose from a wide variety of mil-spec AR trigger systems
- Enhanced Modularity: Configurable for future upgrades like binary/FRT use or multi-position safeties
- Proven Compatibility: Currently supports SCAR 17S and SCAR 20S, with support for SCAR 16S and 15P in development
- Built to Perform: Precision-machined for durability, fitment, and long-term use under demanding conditions
Part of the Cypher System
The Imperial Arms MTM (Mil-Spec Trigger Module) is more than just a standalone product—it's a core component of the Cypher System, a fully modular upgrade architecture designed to modernize and enhance the FN SCAR platform or serve as the foundation for a complete Cypher rifle build. Every part of the Cypher System is engineered to work seamlessly together for reliability, modularity, and future expandability.
BBC Integration for Advanced Trigger Compatibility
The MTM interfaces directly with the Imperial Arms Buffered Bolt Carrier (BBC), which is precision-machined to include integrated sear trip provisions. When used together, the MTM and BBC enable compatibility with advanced fire control systems such as binary triggers, forced reset triggers (FRTs), and the upcoming 2- and 3-position Super Safety selector system. This level of integration is only possible within the Cypher System—ensuring smooth operation and safe, reliable performance.
Availability, Specs & Model Support
The Imperial Arms MTM is currently available for the SCAR 17S and SCAR 20S, with support for the SCAR 16S and SCAR 15P planned for future development. As part of the Cypher System, the MTM is built for long-term compatibility and modularity across SCAR and Cypher platforms.
Each MTM is precision-machined from 7075-T6 aluminum and finished with a rugged anodized coating for durability and corrosion resistance. It also accepts SR25/AR-10 magazines, giving you greater flexibility in magazine selection and capacity.
Whether you're upgrading your SCAR or building a Cypher from the ground up, the MTM gives you complete trigger freedom and unmatched forward compatibility.

Sear Trip Options
The Imperial Arms MTM (Mil-Spec Trigger Module) interfaces directly with the Buffered Bolt Carrier (BBC) to enable a range of advanced fire control options. The MTM provides the structural trigger interface, while the BBC is selectively provisioned for sear trip functionality based on the intended trigger configuration.
Available and planned sear trip options include:
- M16 Sear Trip – Designed exclusively for use by licensed 07/02 FFL/SOT manufacturers qualified to produce NFA-regulated machine guns. Not for civilian use.
- FRT Interface – Optimized for compatibility with Wide Open Trigger (WOT) and Rare Breed FRT systems.
- Upcoming Designs – Additional sear trip geometries are in development to support other FRT variants and the future Super Safety selector systems.
The MTM interfaces with the Buffered Bolt Carrier (BBC) to enable advanced fire control functionality. The BBC itself is selectively provisioned with sear trip geometry, but that geometry only functions in conjunction with a compatible MTM and appropriate trigger setup. It’s the combination of these components—the MTM, the BBC, and the selected fire control group—that determines overall compatibility and performance. Some configurations may require professional fitting, and all installations must comply with applicable laws and regulations.

In all of the above scenarios, a sear trip must be installed on the Buffered Bolt Carrier. This component can be optionally selected before adding the item to your cart. A left-side sear trip is ideal for use with the MTM; however, certain advanced setups may warrant a right-side sear trip instead. Since this item is not returnable, we strongly recommend contacting us before making your purchase to ensure you select the correct configuration.
Unsupported Trigger Modules
While other aftermarket SCAR trigger modules exist, they are not part of the Cypher System and are not supported by Imperial Arms. These third-party modules may not meet the dimensional or mechanical requirements necessary for proper function with Cypher components like the BBC or Super Safety selector. Only the MTM has been purpose-built for total compatibility within the Cypher architecture and offers a proven, forward-compatible platform for serious users looking to get the most out of their SCAR or Cypher build.
